Full Job Description

The position is 37.5 hours per week worked 5 days over a 7 day period including weekends which are worked at normal time (7.5 hour days) 10 am till 6 pm.

The post holder will also be required to participate in the winter on call rota for gritting and snow clearing between November and March.

The successful candidate will be expected to be able to carry out site clearance activities to maintain the external site areas in a clean and tidy condition including sweeping roads and footpaths, removing debris and litter etc, clearing road gullies and removing debris from roof areas.

They may also be expected to undertake works outside their core duties at times of operational necessity., The successful candidate will be required to ensure the Trusts site grounds and gardens are maintained to a high standard in accordance with legislation and codes of practice.

The work includes the sweeping of roads, kerb edges and footpaths, litter picking, emptying litter bins, removing debris from the trust grounds and roof areas. The cleaning of road gullies, roof gutters, fallen leaves and undertaking snow clearing, gritting and other routine winter duties.

They may also be required to assist the grounds operatives with landscaping including paving, walling and minor tarmac repairs, as well as some machinery and equipment maintenance.

They will need the ability to communicate both verbally & written, be able to operate a smart phone which the trust uses to allocate jobs and to facilitate immediate response to urgent requests and emergency breakdowns. They should be able to work under their own initiative and as part of a team and to carry out strenuous physical tasks and work in adverse weather conditions.

They will be required to undertake all monitoring procedures for hand arm vibration and noise exposure in accordance with the Health & Safety executive requirements including completion of exposure logs.

This job can involve prolonged periods of physical activity and therefore the post holder must be capable of undertaking such duties., The external environment team are responsible for providing a pleasant environment for the staff patients and visitors of the Trust.

This is a hard working team who have a physically demanding role working in all weather conditions including working out of hours to keep the hospital open in adverse weather

We are looking to appoint a motivated individual as a Site Clearance Operative to work within the Estates External Environment Team. The team are a small group who work trust wide; the new post holder will be predominantly based at St James University Hospital., The successful candidate will be required to drive trust vehicles therefore a full drivers licence is an essential qualification for this position. Training will be given on the machinery they will be expected to operate.

Essential qualifications - Formal Qualifications (CSE/GCSE) and Current British Full Drivers Licence.

Desirable Qualifications - Knowledge of Health & Safety, Moving & Handling, COSHH.

The External Environment team are a small group within the Operational Estates Department; it consists of 10 staff members including site clearance operatives, grounds and gardens maintenance operatives as well as a bricklayer and head gardener. The team are led by an Estates officer and are an integral part of the Estates Trust Wide Building team.
