Full Job Description

Working at our new state of the art Energy from Waste Facility, we are currently recruiting for the position of an Operations Engineer for a new build Energy from Waste facility located on the former Drakelow C coal fired power station near Burton on Trent. The facility will generate electricity using gasification technology with Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) as the primary fuel. Vital Energy are the owners, EPC, operators, and maintainers of the facility.

The Role:

As the Facility is now fully built and in the commissioning phase. All individual items of equipment have been commissioned; however, we are now commissioning the Gasifier & Boiler streams and Turbine Generator as a whole, carrying out tuning and modification to facilitate and achieve take over tests. You will be employed during the commissioning phase of the project to provide day work SAP and operations department support duties.

Primarily you will be required to lead the function of Permit office and provide leadership and instruction to the operations department in the company's Safe System of Work

You will be required to be authorised and enact the role of Senior Authorised Person under the Vital Energi Generation Safety Rules including Authorised Person, and Competent Person applying Safety Precautions including LV and mechanical isolations, Gas Testing & Confined Space AP reports. You will also be required to oversee and give guidance to the operations teams in creating standard operating procedures, Risk Assessments and Method Statements for the safe operation of the plant.

You will undergo self-learning via on-the-job training in the Vital Energi Generation Safety Rules and Safe System of Work and will be expected to learn the operation of the facility. The successful candidate will be required to:

Main duties will include:

  • Under the Vital Energi Generation Safety Rules, enact the roles of:

  • Competent Person for receiving Permits,

  • Authorised Person for applying Safety Precautions on LV apparatus, mechanical plant, gas testing and confined spaces.

  • Senior Authorised Person, writing Permits, identifying safety precautions required to be applied and instructing or carrying out the Safety Precautions required to achieve "Safety from the System"

  • Providing leadership, direction and training to the Shift Team Leaders, Plant Operators, and Operations & Maintenance Assistants in the application of the Safety Rules and the Safe System of Work.

  • Planning, implementing, and monitoring work and processes through good practice to maximise efficiency and ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance.

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of Nisoft E3 electronic permit system

  • Contributing to the development of effective O&M procedures, operating instructions, and RAMS for the facility.

  • Being responsible for the assessment of Work Orders, and RAMS

  • Building and maintaining relationships with colleagues to ensure effective communication across the site.

  • Proactively searching for site defects, raising awareness, reporting and seeking rectification.

  • Planning and management of plant outages and major overhauls.

    Have a background in engineering or process operations and hold the following qualifications:

  • NVQ /ONC or equivalent within a relevant Engineering or Operations discipline or suitably qualified by industry experience.

  • Proven experience as a Senior Authorised Person for creating and issuing Safety Documents / Permits to work

  • A safety qualification, preferably IOSH or NEBOSH.

  • Full UK Driving Licence.
