Full Job Description

Both the Catering and Cleaning Teams provide a vital service to enable the College to carry out its core function of teaching and learning. They are essential roles within the College.

The Catering at the College was brought in-house at the beginning of 2024 and operates from a recently constructed 'Grab & Go' kitchen (Hills Café) on the ground floor of the college. The College has also opened a smaller second outlet (The Hub) for break and lunchtime service offering different options to the main kitchen. The current College Catering Team is made up of 4 people. The Catering part of this role will predominantly be based in The Hub.

The Cleaning team is currently made up of 6 staff; some who work term-time only and some work all year round. Each person has a designated area they are responsible for but it is important that all members of the team work collaboratively and they do work in other areas around the site when cover is needed.

The College is busy both during term time and during holidays. As well as the our 2800 daytime students (aged 16-19), the College has around 300 staff. It also runs an Adult Education programme which is mostly held online but we do have some classes on site in the evenings. Various other meetings, events and lettings take place, mainly in the evening, but sometimes during the day in holiday periods.

Training will be given in equipment operation, Health & Safety and any other statutory training requirements. On site car parking may be available during hours of work.

The Post

The role involves a 50/50 split across both Catering and Cleaning.

The successful applicant for the post of Catering Assistant/Cleaner will need to be capable of working both as part of a team or alone. Reliability, common sense, patience, an eye for detail and taking pride in your work together are all necessary for this job. You will also need to be pro-active and report any maintenance needs to the Catering Manager, Cleaning Supervisor or Caretakers so repairs can be carried out., Purpose: To carry out cleaning duties as part of a small team of cleaners,

  • To be responsible for cleaning areas of the College site as agreed with the Cleaning Supervisor to the standards and schedules prescribed

  • Maintain levels of cleaning products and equipment in that area and request additional supplies and replacements as necessary

  • Report any defects or faults in equipment to the Cleaning Supervisor as soon as possible

  • Report any faults or defects to the premises to the Caretakers as soon as possible e.g. broken toilet seats, blocked toilets

  • Assist with cleaning in other areas of the College as and when required, particularly during staff absences

  • Operate and maintain the supplied cleaning machines and tools

  • Other interior and exterior cleaning as necessary, within the broad remit of the job, as determined by the Cleaning Supervisor

  • To undertake training which is relevant to the role and/or which is required by the College to comply with legislation

  • Health and safety, Purpose: The role of Catering Assistant is to take an active part in our Catering Team across a range of activities, including food preparation, ensuring that all kitchen and front of house areas are clean and tidy and to ensure the smooth running of all catering requirements, sales to customers and operation of tills at all times providing a positive experience for our customers., To support the rest of the Catering Team in the preparation of a wide range of nutritious food and snacks for our customers, predominantly our students and staff. To also include the provision of hospitality ordered by the college for guests and visitors.

  • To work collaboratively as part of the Catering Team to ensure that the kitchen is clean and tidy at all times, and that service areas are well presented

  • To ensure that all essential training for the role is kept fully up to date, and to attend role suitable training and development where required

  • To deliver an efficient service to our customers whilst ensuring we achieve great customer service and maintain the highest food safety standards

  • To work collaboratively within a team to ensure that our Catering service provision is successfully delivered consistently to the required standard each and every day

  • To assist in receiving food deliveries, food handling, food storage, effective stock rotation, unpacking and counting of all deliveries and keeping all shelves and display cabinets fully stocked throughout the day

  • To remove waste from all areas, including segregation of waste in line with the College policy

  • To ensure full compliance with all areas of Health and Safety during the preparation and storage of food, including observing and maintaining COSHH, Safe Systems of Work, Risk Assessments, HACCP records & temperature controls, as requested and required

  • To report any defects, risks or near miss incidents immediately in accordance procedure
